Intellectual giftedness can be identified through intelligence tests (also referred to as IQ tests). There are several levels of giftedness, similar to levels of disability. The levels are as follows:
(Sheely & Silverman, 2000)
There are other forms of giftedness, of course. These are, however, more difficult to identify, as many - such as the musically gifted, physically gifted, artistically gifted or giftedness in leadership skills – require a subjective identification, and are also closely bound to culture. Often, though, a child who has a talent in one area also has talents in other areas, and some of these will show up in an IQ test.
Generally, schools will cater for intellectually gifted children whose IQs are in the vicinity of 130+.
If you have a gifted preschooler, you may want to consider early entry to school.
If you have thought about having your child identified, you may have wondered whether to ask for an IQ test or whether an identification package is more appropriate.
Our Identification package includes an IQ test, and also identifies ADHD-like behaviour, level of anxiety and depression. This is very useful, as many gifted children act out or withdraw for a variety of reasons. Identifying these issues will help ensure that they will be addressed for the benefit of the child. Additionally, our package for children over the age of 7 years includes an emotional quotient (EQ) assessment, as some children are gifted in the areas Howard Gardner* has called Interpersonal and Intrapersonal intelligences. Identifying these will be helpful in formulating an Individual Education Plan for your child. Alternately, identifying a deficit in these areas will again ensure that these areas are addressed. EQ is now an area regarded by recruitment agencies as being as important as intelligence, if not more so. Please scroll down for additional information about our services.
